Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria

A jewel of Abruzzo's Romanesque-Gothic architecture

One of the highest examples of the historical, artistic and economic importance of our strong and gentle region during the Middle Ages, the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria in Castiglione a Casauria, in the province of Pescara, will fascinate you with the silent sacredness of its spaces, so essential and yet so precious.

This magnificent Benedictine complex, whose history from its origins to 1182 is described in the Chronicon Casauriense, is not only an extraordinary example of medieval architecture but also an important cultural and religious centre that has profoundly influenced the history of Abruzzo.
Built in 871 at the behest of Emperor Ludwig II, it quickly became a southern nerve centre for the Frankish Empire due to its strategic location along the route of the Via Valeria. It suffered considerable damage in the last decades of the 10th century: in 951 due to Saracen raids and in 990 following an earthquake that struck the region.

It was thanks to Abbot Leonate that the abbey experienced a rebirth in the second half of the 12th century, becoming an important monastic centre, inspired by nearby Montecassino.

With three naves, the exterior is adorned by a tripartite portico with three round arches corresponding to the three entrance portals, decorated with refined ornaments.

The central entrance arch has bronze doors that preserve 48 of the original 72 panels.

Upon entering, your gaze will be caught by the 12th-century pulpit, decorated with ornaments framing beautiful rose windows. The pulpit is a masterpiece of medieval sculpture, with scenes from the New Testament and Christian symbols.

Looking around, you cannot fail to notice the Easter candelabra and the 14th-century ciborium, carved from an early Christian sarcophagus and decorated with floral motifs.

The Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria is not only a place of worship but also a site of great cultural interest, declared a national monument.

In addition to its architectural and artistic beauty, the abbey hosts cultural events, concerts and exhibitions that highlight its rich historical heritage.

A true jewel, rich in history and art, which still witnesses the magnificence of Abruzzo's past.
